About this wallet

Shopee's official wallet, mainly for in-app purchases on Shopee, P2P transfers and bill payments, extended to offline merchants via SGQR in 2025. Best for heavy Shopee shoppers; of limited value to tourists.

!Not a bank. ShopeePay is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore under the Payment Services Act; wallet balances are e-money, not deposits, and are not deposit-insured. As of 2026 the service is still operating in Singapore (not wound down), and since June 2025 it can scan NETS QR codes via SGQR for offline merchant payments.

Can foreigners or tourists open it?

You can register, but it is of limited use to visitors. You need a Singapore mobile number to open a Shopee account and activate ShopeePay; verification runs mainly through Singpass (MyInfo auto-fill, instant for residents and pass holders). Tourists without Singpass generally cannot complete full KYC and are left with a very low-limit basic wallet, and offline acceptance is well behind GrabPay.

Advantages

  • Fastest checkout on Shopee with frequent vouchers and cashback
  • Tightly integrated with SPayLater instalments and coin cashback
  • Since 2025 it can scan NETS SGQR codes, widening offline acceptance

Limitations

  • Verification depends on Singpass, so tourists can rarely complete KYC
  • Offline acceptance is much smaller than GrabPay or bank wallets
  • Balances are mostly useful only inside the Shopee ecosystem

What you need
