What changed out in the world

These are changes in bank, payment-provider or regulator terms — they can change whether you can open, what to bring, and what it costs.

Correction

Correction: WeChat Pay's fee-free window is 90 calendar days, not 60

We had followed third-party reporting of 60 days. Tencent's own terms say 90 calendar days (the campaign runs to 2026-12-31). This changes how long a foreign card can be used without the fee.

Correction: SPDB's airport account is officially the “E-Money Card”

We previously wrote it as “Travel Card”. It is now the official “E-Money Card”, so you don't ask for the wrong product at the counter.

Correction

Correction: WeChat's foreign-card limits are about ¥6,000 per transaction / ¥60,000 per year

The earlier 6,500 / 65,000 figures were outdated. Both the article body and the FAQ now use the current official figures.

Account Pass: the toolkit is renamed, slimmed down and free for good

The old toolkit's three tools are now one: two taps and you get a checkable, printable, exportable document checklist. No member code, open to visitors. /toolbox/ now 301s to /pass/.

Real-outcome database is open for submissions

Report which bank, which city, which visa, whether it worked, and where it stalled — or report what actually landed from a cross-border transfer. Aggregated success rates are free to read.

Structure

Parameterised bank links now 301 to the canonical page

Old-style /bank/?b=xxx links permanently redirect to /bank/xxx/. Faster and cleaner for visitors, and it stops the same bank being read as several duplicate pages.

12 new in-China guides: SIM cards, permanent residence, property, tax, insurance, remittance

Each of these sits right before or after opening an account, and each is a topic general AI commonly gets wrong. Every guide was checked against official sources, in Chinese and English.

English site cleanup: headings, body copy and descriptions are now static English

English pages used to swap their headings at runtime, so crawlers and share cards sometimes picked up Chinese. Everything is now baked in as English.

New deep-dive: can you open an account on a tourist (L) visa?

The highest-risk group gets its own page: how often short-stay visitors actually succeed in mainland China, which branches are more likely to accept them, and what to use if they can't.
